New Missouri Law on Student Cell Phone Use During School Hours 📵

Posted Date: 6/03/25 (1:49 PM)

As part of a new state law passed by the Missouri Legislature in 2025, all public schools across Missouri—including Putnam County R-I—will be implementing updated guidelines on student cell phone use during the school day.

Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, student cell phones, tablets, smart watches, and other smart devices must remain unused during the entire school day, including class time, passing periods, lunch, and study halls. This law aims to create fewer distractions and more focused learning environments for students across the state.

At Putnam County R-I, we believe in fostering a school culture that puts learning first. While this may feel like a shift for some, we see it as an opportunity to increase meaningful interactions, student engagement, and academic success.

✅ Exceptions will be made for emergencies, students with documented medical or disability needs, or when a teacher specifically incorporates phone use into a lesson.
✅ Students will continue to have access to their school email throughout the day, and each school office remains available by phone, email, or ParentSquare should families need to get in touch during the school day.

📦 More details about designated phone storage areas, procedures, and expectations will be shared with families as we get closer to back-to-school time. Devices are expected to be stored in their backpacks and powered off during school hours.
